Medicare Basics

What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals age 65 and older,

as well as certain younger individuals with qualifying disabilities or medical conditions.

Understanding the different parts of Medicare can help you make informed decisions about your healthcare coverage.

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Medicare Part A helps cover:

Inpatient hospital stays

Skilled nursing facility care

Hospice care

Certain home health services

Most individuals do not pay a monthly premium for Part A if they have worked and paid Medicare taxes for a sufficient period.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Medicare Part B helps cover:

Doctor visits

Preventive services

Outpatient care

Durable medical equipment

Certain home health services

Part B generally requires a monthly premium.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

These plans provide all Part A and Part B benefits and may include additional benefits depending on the plan.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

Coverage, formularies, pharmacy networks, and costs vary by plan.

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage

Original Medicare consists of Part A and Part B coverage provided directly through the federal government.

Medicare Advantage plans are offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare

and provide Medicare-covered services through a health plan.

Why Understanding Medicare Matters

Choosing Medicare coverage involves understanding your healthcare needs, prescription medications, budget,

and preferred providers. Learning the basics can help you make informed decisions about your coverage options.
